Facebook Is Not Only Used By Old People
Facebook Is Not Only Used By Old People
Essentials of Social Media Marketing (Chapter 4)
Have you ever heard the “Facebook is for old people” stereotype? While many older adults use it more than other social media platforms, Facebook is still widely used by people of all ages. Facebook remains the largest social media platform in the world. It was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. According to Exploding Topics (https://explodingtopics.com/blog/top-social-media-platform), 3.2 billion people use Facebook each month, representing about 37% to 40% of the world’s population. As a young adult, I was surprised to learn that nearly half of the world actively uses Facebook.
Today, Facebook is used by both personal users and businesses. Most people use Facebook for their own interests and hobbies. Some use it as a main source of entertainment, while others read news, create content, stay connected with family and friends, buy and sell items through Facebook Marketplace, plan events or join online groups. Facebook groups especially allow people with shared interests to connect, whether that involves sports, hobbies, college communities or local events. These features make Facebook feel less like a single social media app and more like an online community space.
Businesses also use Facebook in many different ways. Companies rely on the platform to market and promote their brands or products to large audiences. Facebook allows businesses to analyze customer demographics and create targeted advertisements based on age, location, interests and behavior. This makes marketing more efficient compared with traditional advertising methods. In 2011, Facebook introduced Messenger as a separate messaging feature. Messenger made it easier for users to communicate directly, and it quickly became valuable for businesses as well. Many companies now use Messenger as a customer service tool because it allows them to respond quickly, answer questions and build stronger relationships with customers in real time.
Even though newer platforms such as TikTok and Snapchat are popular among younger audiences, Facebook still plays an important role in social media culture. Many college students continue to use Facebook for practical reasons, such as joining campus organizations, browsing event pages and checking Marketplace listings. Personally, I find Facebook useful for staying updated on community news and events that are not always shared on other platforms.
One reason Facebook has stayed relevant is because it continues to adapt to changing social media trends. A newer feature that helps attract younger users is Facebook Reels. Reels focus on short-form video content, which has become extremely popular across social media. Instead of only seeing long posts or photo updates, users can now scroll through quick and entertaining videos directly on Facebook. This makes the platform feel more modern and appealing to younger generations.
Facebook Reels allow users to create short videos using music, effects and editing tools, making content creation more creative and accessible. Many younger users enjoy short videos because they are fast-paced and easy to watch, especially when people only have a few minutes to scroll. By introducing Reels, Facebook gives younger audiences a reason to stay active on the platform rather than moving entirely to newer apps. Businesses and creators also benefit because they can promote products in a more casual and engaging way that connects better with younger consumers.
Chapter 4 of Essentials of Social Media Marketing helped me realize that social media platforms evolve rather than disappear. Facebook may not always feel like the trendiest app, but its large user base and wide range of features keep it relevant. Rather than being a platform only for older generations, Facebook continues to connect people of different ages, interests and backgrounds around the world.
