Finding My Way Back to a Healthy Lifestyle in College
Finding My Way Back to a Healthy Lifestyle in College
Coming into college, I told myself I wanted to start working out more. At first, it felt like a simple goal. I thought I would naturally fall back into a routine once I got settled. But as the semester went on, I realized that staying active in college looks very different from what it did before. Growing up, I was almost always doing a sport. Practices, workouts, and games were part of my daily routine, so staying active never felt like something I had to plan or force myself to do. Exercise was just built into my life. I did not think about motivation because there was always a team depending on me and a schedule already set. Looking back, I realize how much that structure helped me maintain a healthy lifestyle without even noticing it.
College changed that completely. Suddenly, no one was telling me when to work out or expecting me to show up. My schedule became filled with classes, homework, meetings, and social activities, and I had to decide for myself how to manage my time. Some days feel nonstop, and by the time I finally have a free moment, the last thing I want to do is go to the gym. It has been frustrating at times because I know how good I used to feel when being active was part of my everyday life. One thing that has helped me reconnect with working out is going with friends. When I try to go alone, it is easy to make excuses or say I will go another day. But when friends invite me, the gym becomes something I actually look forward to instead of something I feel obligated to do. At the same time, balancing workouts with my college schedule is still a challenge. Some weeks I feel consistent and motivated, while other weeks school responsibilities take priority. I am learning that building a routine now requires effort and intentional choices instead of automatic habits. That adjustment has not been easy, but it has helped me understand the importance of discipline and balance.
This experience has made me reflect on what a healthy lifestyle really means. It is not about returning to exactly who I was as an athlete, but about creating new habits that fit my life now. Working out helps me clear my mind, reduce stress, and feel more confident, which is something I want to prioritize again.
As a freshman, I am still figuring things out, including how to balance responsibilities while taking care of myself. Rebuilding healthy habits is a process, and I know it will not happen overnight. For now, my goal is simply to keep trying, lean on my friends for motivation, and slowly work toward becoming a healthier and more balanced version of myself again.
